Data and control signals belong, for their own protection, locked in a cage, a Faraday cage. Because that's exactly how a cable gland with EMC locknut from LAPP works. But what does EMC-compliant connection mean?

From the point of view of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), the design of cable glands, cables and connectors must be such that the connection between the cable shield and the earth potential has a low resistance. This means:

"Ideally, the cable shield, together with the cable gland and the metallic enclosure wall, establishes a closed connection."

A shielding braid that is twisted into a pig's tail and is only fixed at one point in the enclosure by a few fine wires generates a high impedance over a short distance in the worst case and is therefore less suitable for EMC-compliant connection.

A further hurdle is posed by painted or powder-coated enclosures, which make a direct connection to the metal enclosure wall difficult.

The requirements at a glance:

  • The copper shielding braid is laid out all around (over a large area) and without gaps at the transition into the enclosure.
  • The cable gland is connected to the metallic enclosure wall with low impedance.
  • The assembly and disassembly of the cable must be possible quickly, easily and without damage to the copper shielding braid.
  • Optimum shield contact is ensured at both ends of the cable and applied to the earth potential.
